Interim Health Center opened at Charles Harwood Medical Complex on St. Croix
Government House said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and Health Commissioner nominee Justa Encarnacion announced the opening of temporary modular units at the Charles Harwood Medical Complex during a ceremony on April 4, 2019, at Estate Richmond on St. Croix.
The Charles Harwood Medical Complex had operated at minimal capacity after sustaining significant damage during Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.
According to the announcement, FEMA provided $1 million to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for installation of 66 modular units to be used as temporary medical, EMS and administrative facilities. FEMA also obligated more than $1.1 million to furnish the units with furniture and electronics.
Deputy Health Commissioner Reuben Molloy said the modular units were part of a midterm plan, while the department's long-term plan was to demolish and rebuild the Charles Harwood facility.
The April 4 ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting and a tour of one of the modular units.
