Bryan signs proclamation recognizing May as Older Americans Month in the Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. signed a proclamation recognizing May 2019 in the U.S. Virgin Islands as Older Americans Month, Government House said on May 1, 2019.

The proclamation recognized the contributions of older Americans living in the territory and highlighted efforts to improve services and expand access to benefits programs for older adults, their families and caregivers.

In a statement, Bryan said older residents serve as "culture bearers and gatekeepers of our heritage and many traditions." Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach also said the month recognized elders' role in preserving the territory's history, culture and traditions.

Government House said the Department of Human Services supports programs and activities intended to promote physical, mental and emotional well-being and home- and community-based services that support independent living for older adults.
