The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said extended water sampling on St. Croix was scheduled for Sept. 28 through Oct. 1, 2023, as part of efforts to address brown water complaints.

WAPA said it was working with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of the Virgin Islands on the sampling plan. The agency said 65 sample locations had been identified across the island, including primary and secondary areas affected by brown water.

According to the notice, sampling was to take place at accessible meters from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and did not require customer assistance or additional property access.

WAPA identified La Grande Princess as a priority location for the extended sampling.

The agency said the testing was intended to establish baseline measurements for iron, metals, pH, chlorine and bacteria at locations across St. Croix. WAPA said results from EPA, UVI and WAPA laboratories were expected within two to three weeks after sampling, after which WAPA and DPNR would review the findings and issue an update.
