Bryan nominated Ariel K. Smith for Virgin Islands attorney general
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. submitted the nomination of Ariel K. Smith to the 35th Legislature on March 20, 2023, for the position of Virgin Islands attorney general.
Smith had served as chief of the Civil Division in the Virgin Islands Department of Justice since 2016, according to the nomination announcement.
In a letter to Senate President Novelle Francis Jr., Bryan asked the Legislature to act "expeditiously and favorably" on the nomination "to prevent any delays in the official functions of the department."
Smith earned a law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in New Jersey.
Before becoming chief of the Civil Division, Smith served for seven years as an assistant attorney general in the division, where she handled civil matters for the Virgin Islands government in District Court and Superior Court. The announcement said she also previously served for five years as an assistant territorial public defender and worked in private practice at Smock and Moorhead.
