Bryan declared Juneteenth a holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. on June 17, 2021, declared June 19 a holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands after President Joseph R. Biden signed legislation establishing the date as a federal holiday.
Bryan also announced administrative leave for non-essential government employees and the closure of government offices on June 18, 2021, in honor of the new federal holiday. The territory was set to officially observe the holiday on June 19, 2021, in accordance with federal law.
The announcement followed congressional passage of the legislation and Biden's signing of the measure on June 17, 2021.
Juneteenth marks the date in 1865 when the last enslaved Africans in the United States learned from Union soldiers in Texas that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
