WAPA warned customers about fraudulent calls seeking immediate payment
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on December 16, 2019, that customers had reported additional fraudulent telephone calls demanding immediate payment and threatening service disconnection.
WAPA said some callers claimed to be authority employees and, in some cases, used specific customer account information while seeking payment. Executive Director Lawrence J. Kupfer said the authority had previously warned on December 1, 2019, about similar calls coming from a toll-free number.
The authority said its staff did not call customers to demand immediate payment or threaten disconnection. WAPA said telephone contact with customers occurred after service had already been disconnected because of delinquency.
WAPA said customers who received such calls should disregard them and report them to the Virgin Islands Police Department or to WAPA's Internal Audit Revenue Assurance Division at 340-715-6563.
The authority also said customers who did not receive their monthly bill in the usual time period should contact customer service on St. Thomas and St. John at 340-774-3552 or on St. Croix at 340-773-2250 to verify account information.
