Derek Gabriel sworn in as Public Works commissioner on St. Thomas

Derek Gabriel was sworn in as commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Public Works on June 3, 2021, during a ceremony at the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas.

Virgin Islands Supreme Court Chief Justice Rhys Hodge administered the oath. Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. attended the ceremony.

Government House said Gabriel assumed leadership of the department as about a dozen major road projects were underway or in various stages of completion across the territory.

The government also said Gabriel had held a ribbon-cutting ceremony the previous week for the completed Main Street Enhancement project on St. Thomas.

Gabriel's wife, Keli, and daughter, Savanah, held the Bible during the oath.
