Mapp asked Legislature for $5 million more for tax refunds and $10 million for waste hauling

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp asked the 32nd Legislature on October 26, 2018, to appropriate an additional $5 million for tax refunds and $10 million for the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority to pay outstanding obligations to waste haulers and other vendors.

In a letter to Senate President Myron Jackson, Mapp said the government had paid $194,709,448 in income tax refunds for tax years 2010 through 2015 and part of 2016 since he took office in 2015. He said the government had been five years behind on refund payments when he was sworn in.

Mapp also said that although $4 million had been appropriated for VIWMA vendor payments, the authority was still struggling to pay vendors. He said the proposed bill he submitted sought another $10 million for companies contracted to haul the territory's solid waste.
