Mapp announces solar projects at three sites in U.S. Virgin Islands
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp announced on August 10, 2018, that three sites in the U.S. Virgin Islands had been selected for solar installations and that his administration planned to pursue regulations allowing residents and building owners to install renewable energy systems while remaining connected to the grid.
The announcement was made with former President Bill Clinton, Bloomberg co-founder Tom Secunda and officials from Expedia Group.
The three sites selected were the Family Resource Center on St. Thomas, Gifft Hill School on St. John and St. John Christian Academy on St. John.
According to Government House, the solar panels, batteries and installation were to be funded by Expedia Group through a commitment of the Clinton Global Initiative Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery, in partnership with Secunda and Bloomberg Philanthropies, Construction for Change and the Sextant Foundation.
Mapp said he intended to expand renewable-energy generation on government buildings and land, as well as on homes and businesses. He also said he planned to work with the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and the Public Services Commission on regulations related to grid-connected renewable energy systems.
At the event, Mapp also recognized the work of the Family Resource Center, where the announcement was made.
