The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on April 4, 2023, that installation of a 9-megawatt battery energy storage system was underway as part of the Randolph Harley Power Plant New Generation Project on St. Thomas.

WAPA said the project included four 9-megawatt Wartsila generators and the battery system, which was being integrated into the Randolph Harley system. The authority described the battery installation as one of the remaining steps before the generators could be brought online.

According to WAPA, the project began in 2021. The Randolph Harley plant supplies electricity to St. Thomas and, through underwater cables, to Water Island and St. John.

WAPA said the Randolph Harley New Generation Project was fully funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
