U.S. Virgin Islands recovery anniversary report posted online
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp announced on October 26, 2018, that a first-year progress report on the U.S. Virgin Islands' recovery from Hurricanes Irma and Maria had been published on the Government House website.
The report summarized conditions following the September 2017 storms, when the territory lost power and communications, roads were washed out, more than half of homes were severely damaged, and many hotels, businesses and public infrastructure were damaged.
According to Government House, the report said power was restored within 100 days of the storms, airports and cruise ship terminals reopened to commercial traffic within 60 days, and public water distribution resumed within one month. It also said nearly 1 million cubic yards of debris were collected within six months, emergency repairs were made to more than 5,000 homes, and students began a staggered return to classrooms 34 days after Hurricane Irma.
Government House said the federal government had committed more than $8 billion in recovery assistance for the territory.
