Bryan approved seven bills and vetoed three measures after the 35th Legislature’s Nov. 14 session
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. approved seven bills and vetoed three measures passed by the 35th Legislature during its Nov. 14, 2023 session, according to a Government House statement issued Nov. 30, 2023. He also acknowledged several nominations, commendations and the Legislature’s override of his veto of Bill No. 35-0082.
The approved measures were Bill No. 35-0048, requiring the Government Employees’ Retirement System to send each active member an annual report of contributions by mail or electronically at the member’s option; Bill No. 35-0074, honoring former Sen. Almando "Rocky" Liburd and renaming North Shore Road on St. John as The Almando "Rocky" Liburd Drive; Bill No. 35-0180, appropriating $5.124 million from the Community Facilities Trust Fund for the Paul E. Joseph Stadium project; Bill No. 35-0190, appropriating $350,000 from the General Fund for bottled drinking water in areas identified by the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority as most affected by elevated copper and lead levels; Bill No. 35-0191, appropriating $17 million from excess funds in the Debt Service Reserve Fund for Gross Receipts Taxes Revenue Bonds to the Virgin Islands Port Authority for dredging Charlotte Amalie Harbor; Bill No. 35-0067, approving a lease agreement with Inter-Island Auto Group LLC doing business as VIP Quick Lube for property at Submarine Base on St. Thomas; and Bill No. 35-0104, approving a lease agreement with Roncan Inc. doing business as Sandcastle on the Beach for two plots on St. Croix.
Bryan vetoed Bill No. 35-0014, which would have named the bridge at the Nadir intersection on St. Thomas after Wayne "Facts Man" Adams; Bill No. 35-0200, which would have required WAPA to issue a monthly water bill abatement for six months to residential customers in areas affected by unsatisfactory lead and copper levels; and Bill No. 35-0201, which would have required annual monitoring, testing and analysis of lead and copper content by every owner or operator of a public water system.
The statement said Bryan acknowledged the Legislature’s favorable action on the nominations of Sandra L. Setorie, Clement "Cain" Magras, Laura Nichols-Samms and Kasima I. Knight-Hodge. He also acknowledged Resolution No. 1908, Bill No. 35-0091, honoring and commending Aliyah Boston and awarding her the Key to the Territory.
