Bryan proclamation designated October 2019 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a proclamation on October 1, 2019, designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Government House said the proclamation was intended to draw attention to domestic violence, which it said accounts for 15% of all violent crime in the United States and led to the deaths of 260 Virgin Islanders over the previous decade.

The statement said one in three women and one in four men in the United States had been abused by an intimate partner, and that about 15.5 million children were exposed to domestic violence each year. It also said victim service agencies in the territory assisted an average of 69 victims a day.

Bryan said in the statement that domestic violence affects women, men and children and pledged continued support for organizations including the Women’s Coalition.
