Virgin Islands says income tax refunds reached current 2021 tax year
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on Sept. 19, 2022, that the Virgin Islands government had caught up on issuing income tax refunds through the 2021 tax year.
Government House said the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Finance released 14,269 refund checks totaling $31.4 million between Sept. 1 and Sept. 19, 2022. In the latest round issued in September, 2,941 refunds were for 2021 returns filed earlier in 2022.
According to the administration, all 2020 returns that were processed without audits or other issues had been paid. Bryan said the payments covered everyone who had filed through February 2022.
Government House said the administration had issued 110,138 refund checks totaling $288.8 million since 2019. It said more than $1.3 million in refunds paid during the previous two weeks was funded through federal reimbursement of the Earned Income Tax Credit.
The administration said 3,770 of the refunds issued since Bryan took office were for tax years 2002 through 2015, although most refunds owed to taxpayers had dated back to 2016.
Government House listed refund distributions during the administration as 25,227 checks totaling $63.9 million in 2019, 16,023 checks totaling $49.1 million in 2020, 35,717 checks totaling $91.2 million in 2021, and 33,171 checks totaling $84.7 million in 2022.
