Bryan met with WICO and Port Authority on harbor dredging projects

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. met with leaders of the West Indian Company Ltd. and the Virgin Islands Port Authority on June 30, 2022, to discuss plans for harbor dredging projects in Charlotte Amalie and Gallows Bay, according to Government House.

The administration said the projects had been awaiting federal action and that Mr. Bryan was considering alternative financing options to speed dredging in Gallows Bay on St. Croix and in St. Thomas Harbor, while still requiring U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approval for the structural work.

Government House said the St. Thomas project would deepen the harbor entrance and turning basin to improve access to the WICO dock for larger cruise ships. It said the dock could accommodate one Oasis-class ship and that dredging would increase capacity to as many as three such ships at the same time.

The administration also said the Gallows Bay project was tied to plans to increase cruise calls to St. Croix, including small ships docking in Christiansted and larger vessels at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted.
