WAPA said March bills would cover 60 days of service

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on March 6, 2020, that bills issued during March would cover a 60-day service period as it worked to rebuild its automated metering and billing systems, which it said were severely affected by the 2017 hurricanes.

WAPA said the 60-day billing would begin with bills issued on March 10, 2020. The authority said the change was intended to recover more than $20 million for electric and potable water service that had been provided but not billed.

The authority said customers could enter a payment plan requiring half of the 60-day bill in the first month and the balance in three monthly installments, in addition to regular monthly bills. Customers in the plan were required to remain current on regularly issued monthly bills.

WAPA said the full 60-day bill would otherwise be due 20 days from the bill date. Customers using Auto Pay were told to visit customer service offices to adjust automated payments if they wanted to use the three-month payment plan.

The authority said customers had to enroll in the payment plan at customer service offices before the bill due date. It also said expanded "Service Saturdays" would be held on March 14, March 28, April 4 and April 18, 2020, for payment arrangements, bill payments and billing questions.
