BIR said Nov. 21, 2020 was filing deadline for CARES Act stimulus applications in U.S. Virgin Islands

Government House and the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue said on Nov. 20, 2020, that eligible residents seeking a CARES Act stimulus payment had until Nov. 21, 2020, to file a 2018 income tax return or 2018 Form 1040 with the bureau.

The notice said Nov. 21 was the deadline to file for the payment, not the date when the last payments would be issued. The bureau said it would continue making CARES Act stimulus payments through Dec. 31, 2020.

Under the CARES Act, the notice said, eligible taxpayers could receive $1,200 for individual or head-of-household filers and $2,400 for married residents filing joint returns, provided they were not claimed as dependents, had valid Social Security numbers, and met the applicable income requirements.

The notice said taxpayers who missed the Nov. 21 deadline would be able to claim the Economic Impact Payment on their 2020 income tax return.

As of Nov. 20, 2020, the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Finance Department said they had processed $79,491,778 in CARES Act stimulus payments to 47,395 Virgin Islands residents.
