VA Caribbean Healthcare System began COVID-19 testing for Virgin Islands veterans on May 11

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System began COVID-19 testing for veterans living in the U.S. Virgin Islands on May 11, 2020, at clinic locations on St. Croix and St. Thomas, according to a Government House announcement published May 12, 2020.

Testing was by appointment only and was scheduled to take place two days a week for four weeks. Monday testing was held at the St. Croix VA Clinic at the Village Mall in Barren Spot, and Wednesday testing was held at the St. Thomas VA Clinic in the Medical Foundation building behind Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. The announcement said testing at both sites was being conducted outside the clinics in a drive-through format.

The announcement said veterans selected for testing had already been identified and contacted with appointment information, but other veterans could also be tested. It said 50 veterans had been scheduled for the first day, with the possibility of testing an additional 20.

Veterans with COVID-19-related symptoms were asked to call the VA Clinical Contact Center before visiting a clinic. The announcement said the VA Caribbean Healthcare System, the Virgin Islands Department of Health and the Virgin Islands Office of Veterans Affairs had coordinated a plan for veterans who tested positive or showed symptoms of COVID-19.
