FEMA approved funding for replacement of Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. announced on May 21, 2019, that the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved funding to replace Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix after the facility sustained severe damage during Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
According to the announcement published May 24, 2019, FEMA determined that replacement was eligible because the estimated repair cost exceeded 50% of the estimated replacement cost.
Before the decision, it had been uncertain whether the federal government would fund replacement of the hospital or repairs to the existing structure.
The Government of the Virgin Islands said it would undertake the project in collaboration with Juan F. Luis Hospital. FEMA and the territorial government were developing a fixed-cost estimate for the replacement facility.
The hospital was to continue using modular units already installed on site to treat patients on St. Croix while the new structure was built.
