Bryan marks 175th anniversary of Emancipation Day
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a statement on July 3, 2023, marking the 175th anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the former Danish West Indies.
In the statement, Bryan referenced the July 3, 1848 events in Frederiksted and said the sound of the conch shell recalled the actions of ancestors led by General Buddhoe and Admiral Martin King, who demanded freedom.
The statement also said the anniversary was a time to recognize the resilience of Virgin Islands ancestors and the territory's shared history and cultural heritage.
