Bryan, Plaskett and National Park Service moved to increase enforcement at Buck Island
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and Del. Stacey Plaskett were working with the National Park Service as of Jan. 22, 2021, to add resources aimed at improving visitor safety at Buck Island Reef National Monument following recent incidents there.
Government House said Bryan pledged additional manpower from the Virgin Islands Police Department and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. It also said he sent a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior supporting increased funding for resources to maintain safety at the site.
The National Park Service, in the interim, sent officers from Florida and Puerto Rico to assist with enforcement, according to the statement.
The action followed an incident earlier in January 2021 in which a fight broke out and, according to court documents cited by Government House, a man was arrested after fleeing park rangers when a gun was discharged.
