VIWMA warned of possible sewer overflows and manhole surges during storm conditions
The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority said on August 22, 2020, that storm water entering the sewer collection system was causing heavy inflow that could lead to overflows in low-lying areas across the territory.
The authority said rainwater and storm runoff entering the system could exceed pumping capacity at various pump stations that move sewage from residential and business systems to wastewater treatment plants. It said the sewer collection system could remain affected after rainfall and runoff subsided.
VIWMA urged motorists to use caution on flooded roadways because of potential and known manhole overflows. It also advised residents to avoid standing water and flood areas, particularly people with compromised immune systems.
The authority asked residents to report sewer overflows to its 24-hour hotline.
