Carnival Village on St. Thomas opened as “Judy’s Gypsyville”
The 2018 U.S. Virgin Islands Carnival Village on St. Thomas, named “Judy’s Gypsyville,” opened at the Fort Christian parking lot on April 20, 2018.
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp cut the ribbon at the main entrance with Lt. Gov. Osbert E. Potter, 2018 Carnival Queen Jikelle Kiara Michael, Carnival Prince Maike Caracciolo, Carnival Princess Ta’Mya Davis and village honoree Judy Watson.
During the ceremony, Mapp presented Watson with a plaque, flowers and a pendant made on St. Croix. Potter, Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett, Senate President Myron Jackson and Police Commissioner Delroy Richards Sr. also made presentations.
Watson had chaired the Gypsy Troupe since 2012, according to Government House. The administration said her parents, Aracely and Gerard Watson, helped organize the revived carnival and had participated as Gypsies since 1952.
Government House said the village had 33 booths. During the opening ceremony, Booth 18, owned by Henry Alexander, was announced as a winner of a $1,500 cash prize.
