WAPA announced 2020 Alva C. McFarlane scholarship program

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority announced on February 25, 2020, that it had opened applications for its 2020 Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program.

WAPA said the program would provide up to $60,000 for a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree and up to $20,000 for a student pursuing an associate degree in electrical engineering technology, electronics engineering or another technical field related to the authority’s operations.

The authority said graduating high school seniors, as well as college freshmen and sophomores enrolled in or planning to enroll in an accredited engineering program, were eligible for the bachelor’s award. It said two students from the St. Thomas-St. John district and two from the St. Croix district would receive awards, with one bachelor’s scholarship and one associate-degree scholarship available in each district.

WAPA said the funds would be issued as non-interest-bearing loans. Recipients were expected to repay the awards through employment at WAPA for at least one year for each year scholarship funds were distributed.

The program was named for former governing board member Alva C. McFarlane. WAPA said applications were due by March 31, 2020.
