Eight University of the Virgin Islands pre-engineering and marine students toured the Randolph Harley Power Plant and the Seven Seas desalination facility on St. Thomas on January 26, 2023, according to a Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority release published February 16, 2023.
WAPA said the students, along with UVI faculty and staff, received a presentation on the authority’s transmission and distribution system, including how electricity is routed to specific feeders. The group also visited the plant’s central control room, where operators discussed load balancing and power distribution, and toured the Wartsila generators and Unit 27.
The release said the tour was part of UVI coursework in its pre-engineering program, including the "Island Systems Resilience" class, which examines how infrastructure systems in the Virgin Islands operate.
WAPA also said its relationship with UVI included the Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship program, which offered up to $60,000 in support for eligible engineering students. The release said applications were open through March 2, 2023.
