Bryan resubmitted amended Cannabis Use Act to 33rd Legislature
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. resubmitted an amended version of the proposed Virgin Islands Cannabis Use Act to the 33rd Legislature on May 19, 2020, according to Government House.
The measure would amend Title 19, Chapter 34 of the Virgin Islands Code, known as the Virgin Islands Medicinal Cannabis Patient Care Act.
Government House said the revised bill incorporated input from senators and comments received during town hall meetings held after Bryan first submitted the proposal on Dec. 2, 2019.
During a COVID-19 press briefing on May 18, 2020, Bryan urged the Legislature to act on the measure, saying it was intended in part to generate revenue for the Government Employees Retirement System. Under the proposal, 75% of revenue from cannabis taxes and licensing fees would be directed to GERS.
Government House said Bryan had signed Act No. 8167, the Virgin Islands Medicinal Cannabis Patient Care Act, in January 2019.
