WAPA said it continued hurricane-season preparations amid the COVID-19 pandemic

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on June 1, 2020, that it had continued preparations for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season while also accounting for the COVID-19 pandemic.

WAPA said hurricane-season planning was a year-round effort and said it had adjusted its emergency storm response, safety, preparedness and recovery procedures since the 2017 hurricanes. The authority said those measures were intended to improve coordination with local and federal partners before and after storms.

The utility urged residents to review emergency kits, charge cell phones, unplug major appliances before storms, shelter indoors during storms, and avoid downed or low-hanging wires and damaged utility equipment after storms.

WAPA also said it would provide storm-related updates through its website, outage map, telephone message system and local media outlets.
