Congressional measure forgave $300 million in U.S. Virgin Islands disaster-loan debt

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on Oct. 1, 2021, that Congress had approved a continuing resolution that included forgiveness of $300 million in Community Disaster Loan debt incurred by the U.S. Virgin Islands after the 2017 hurricanes.

According to the statement, the debt relief included $145 million for the Government of the Virgin Islands, $94.5 million for the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority, $42 million for Juan F. Luis Hospital and $19.3 million for Schneider Regional Medical Center.

Government House said Bryan had sought forgiveness of the loans in letters sent on March 19, 2020, to President Donald Trump; on March 24, 2020, to then-FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor; on May 20, 2020, and July 6, 2020, to the FEMA administrator and the Treasury secretary; and on May 17, 2021, to President Joe Biden.
