Two WAPA employees on St. Croix tested positive for COVID-19

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on July 22, 2020, that two employees in the St. Croix district had tested positive for COVID-19.

WAPA said employees who were known to have been in direct contact with the workers, or who worked near their workspaces, were notified, scheduled for preliminary testing, asked to quarantine, and told to contact the Department of Health’s EPI hotline. The authority also said the affected workspaces were isolated, deep-cleaned and sanitized.

According to WAPA, one employee worked in the electric system and the other in the water system. The authority said the employees appeared to have contracted the virus from community sources. It said one employee had reported to an isolated workplace and did not have direct contact with other workers, while the second had primarily been teleworking and had entered a WAPA facility more than a week earlier.

WAPA said 11 people who worked in or around the affected areas, or who may have been in contact with the employees, were scheduled for testing.

The authority said the cases were not expected to affect its ability to provide electric and water service.
