Mapp approved $117.9 million contract for 240 temporary classrooms and 19 support structures

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp approved a contract on April 24, 2018, for the engineering, construction and installation of 240 temporary classrooms and 19 large Sprung structures for use as cafeterias and gymnasiums, according to Government House.

The V.I. Department of Education said 11 schools had remained completely closed since Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Education Commissioner Sharon Ann McCollum said the department expected the modular classrooms to begin arriving in late June 2018.

The contract with AECOM Caribe LLP covered site preparation, layout design, manufacturing, installation and other work needed to deliver turnkey structures to the department. Government House said the cost would not exceed $117.9 million and would be funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Public Assistance Program and proceeds from the Virgin Islands government’s insurance policy.

Government House said the contract called for substantial completion by Aug. 28, 2018.
