Bryan announces USVI travel-screening portal, court nominations and eviction moratorium extension

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on July 27, 2020, that the Virgin Islands had activated an online Department of Tourism portal for arriving passengers to upload travel health screenings and COVID-19 test results before traveling to the territory. The portal was listed as usviupdate.com/travelportal.

At the same briefing, Bryan marked the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and said the territory would continue efforts to comply with the law.

Bryan also nominated two prosecutors to the V.I. Superior Court: Sigrid Tejo-Sprotte for the St. Thomas-St. John District and Alphonso Andrews for the St. Croix District.

He said the government had extended by one month a moratorium on evictions for renters making a good-faith effort to pay and who were 60 days or less behind.

Bryan said the Bureau of Internal Revenue and Department of Finance had processed 6,473 stimulus checks for Social Security recipients totaling $7.8 million.

He also said an anonymous donor had pledged an additional $50,000 to the existing $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the killings of 14-year-old Aaron Ashby and his 29-year-old cousin Rique Ashby at Tutu Hi-Rise on St. Thomas.

During the briefing, VITEMA Director Daryl Jaschen and Human Services Commissioner Kimberley Causey-Gomez gave updates on hurricane preparedness, including shelter protocols and monitoring of Invest 92-L, which officials said could affect the territory as early as July 30, 2020.

Bryan also reported 107 active COVID-19 cases in the territory as of July 27, 2020. He said 8,410 people had been tested, with 8,033 negative results, 364 positive results, 13 pending tests, 250 recoveries and seven deaths. He said two COVID-19 patients were hospitalized at Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix and six were hospitalized at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas, including one on a ventilator.
