Bryan signs proclamation recognizing African Heritage Week and African Liberation Day

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. signed a proclamation recognizing African Heritage Week and African Liberation Day, Government House said on May 21, 2019. African Liberation Day is observed annually on May 25.

Government House said the 2019 observance coincided with the fifth year of the International Decade for People of African Descent, a United Nations initiative that began in 2015 and was scheduled to end in December 2024.

The statement also said Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach attended the United Nations Caribbean Regional Seminar in Grenada on May 2, 2019, on the implementation of the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. According to Government House, the seminar addressed the status of the U.S. Virgin Islands, other U.S. territories in the Caribbean and Pacific, and other territories the United Nations considers non-self-governing.
