WAPA said it completed extended water sampling in downtown Christiansted
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on Nov. 8, 2023, that it had completed extended water sampling in downtown Christiansted in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
WAPA said sampling was extended on Nov. 8, 2023, to Frederiksted, with additional sampling planned for Clifton Hill on Nov. 9, 2023. The authority also said Strawberry Hill, the first neighborhood to receive new waterline installations after testing found high levels of lead and copper, was resampled on Nov. 8, 2023, to determine whether lead levels were undetectable or had returned below the action level.
The authority said it planned to attend a Lew Muckle PTA meeting on the evening of Nov. 8, 2023, to provide an overview of steps it was taking related to lead components in the water system.
The statement also said the Department of Health operated two hotlines for health concerns related to lead in potable water and that the Department of Planning and Natural Resources operated a hotline for sampling concerns. It said lead exposure testing was available at Clinical Laboratory Inc. at Sunny Isle Medical Center on St. Croix and at St. Thomas East End Medical Center at Tutu Park Mall on St. Thomas.
