Health Department reported three additional confirmed COVID-19 cases in U.S. Virgin Islands
The Virgin Islands Department of Health said on March 21, 2020, that three additional COVID-19 cases had been confirmed, bringing the territory’s total to six.
According to the department, two cases were in the St. Croix district and four were in the St. Thomas-St. John district. The new St. Croix case involved a resident who had recently returned home, self-quarantined and recovered. Of the two new St. Thomas cases, one was identified as a close contact of a previous case who quarantined with that person, and the other was a Cyril E. King Airport employee with no recent travel history.
The department said the airport employee case marked the first known community transmission in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The department also reported 74 cumulative persons under investigation. Of those, six tested positive, 25 tested negative and 43 were pending. The breakdown given was two positive cases in St. Croix and four in St. Thomas; 11 negative in St. Croix, 11 in St. Thomas and two in St. John; and 15 pending in St. Croix and 28 pending in St. Thomas.
The department said its Epidemiology Division was continuing testing for people who met person-under-investigation criteria and conducting contact tracing.
