Bryan and Petty break ground for new VITRAN facility on St. Croix
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and Public Works Commissioner Nelson Petty Jr. took part in a groundbreaking ceremony on October 28, 2020, for a new Virgin Islands Transportation System maintenance and operations facility on St. Croix.
Government House said the facility is intended to replace the existing 30-year-old site, which it said lacks the space and equipment needed to maintain VITRAN.
The new facility was designed as a 14,950-square-foot primary operating site for VITRAN. It is to include three buildings: an operations facility, a bus washing building and a tire storage building.
The project also includes four service bays for maintenance of transit vehicles and administrative offices for VITRAN's St. Croix staff.
Government House said the buildings would comply with green building certifications and include skylighting, solar water heaters, insulation radiant barriers, UV reflectors, energy-efficient lighting and other energy-saving features.
The project cost was listed at $6,702,915.
