Government House sought applicants for cannabis expungement initiative
Government House said on Nov. 17, 2023, that people convicted of possessing two ounces or less of cannabis should contact the administration for possible expungement under Act No. 8679.
The law mandates automatic expungement of certain marijuana-related offenses involving no more than two ounces of marijuana. Government House said the outreach was intended to address possible gaps in data received from the Judicial Branch of the Virgin Islands.
Government House said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr.'s special adviser, Positive Nelson, was leading an auto-expungement task force required by the law. According to the statement, the task force included representatives from the Virgin Islands Attorney General's Office, the Office of the Territorial Public Defender, Legal Services of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Bar Association and the Virgin Islands Justice Institute.
