Bryan issues statement on death of Lena Abel-Schulterbrandt

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a statement on October 10, 2019, expressing condolences on the death of Lena Abel-Schulterbrandt, an educator and Frederiksted community advocate on St. Croix.

Government House said Schulterbrandt retired after 40 years in the public school system and was a co-founder of Our Town Frederiksted, an organization focused on improving the town’s economic, physical and social conditions.

The statement said she attended St. Patrick’s School in Frederiksted, earned a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University and a master’s degree from the University of Miami, and later returned to St. Croix, where she supported church and school programs. It also said she served for many years as president of the annual Crucian Christmas Festival.

Bryan said the Department of Tourism’s Division of Festivals had planned to honor Schulterbrandt in December 2019 and that her family would accept the recognition.

Government House also noted that the Rudolph Schulterbrandt Agriculture Complex was named for her husband, former Agriculture Commissioner Rudolph Schulterbrandt, who died in 2000, and that the Arthur Abel Complex in Frederiksted was named for her father.
