Bryan issued statement after second day of St. Croix school closures tied to teacher walkouts

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a statement on Sept. 21, 2023, after a second day of school closures on St. Croix caused by teacher walkouts.

In the statement, Bryan said he was aware of conditions in some schools and of the Education Department's efforts to address them as the territory moved toward construction of new school facilities.

He said the territory, like other jurisdictions, was dealing with climate change, extreme heat and record temperatures, and said some aging school buildings were not built with air conditioning.

Bryan said it was frustrating to work in less-than-ideal conditions and said the government would continue efforts to provide teachers, faculty and staff with safe and comfortable work environments. He also said students were losing instructional time because of the job actions and called for work to continue on resolving the issues.
