WAPA scheduled emergency outage on St. Croix for April 17 and revised rotational outage plan
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on April 16, 2024, that it scheduled an emergency outage on St. Croix for April 17 from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. to de-energize Unit 20 so plant personnel could perform maintenance on the T1 transformer.
WAPA said the outage was intended to address additional maintenance needs tied to increased load from a change in the operational configuration of available generators and to prevent larger, longer outages.
The authority said the April 17 emergency outage was expected to affect about 9,583 customers on feeders 2A, 3A, 4A, 6A, 6B, 7B, 9B and 10B. It said some feeders remained exempt from rotational outages because they serve critical facilities including the hospital and airport.
WAPA also said the morning outage would affect the previously announced rotational outage schedule on St. Croix. Beginning April 17, the revised rotation schedule was listed as follows: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., feeder 2A; 10 a.m. to noon, feeders 3A and 4A; noon to 2 p.m., feeders 6A and 7B; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., feeders 6B and 10B; 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., feeders 3A and 4A; 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., feeder 9B; 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., feeders 10B and 7B; and 10 p.m. to midnight, feeders 6B and 6A.
The authority said the revised rotational outages would be used on an as-needed basis, primarily during peak hours. It also said some customers could experience water service interruptions during electrical outages because of power loss at pump stations.
