Bryan condemns celebratory gunfire after police seize 17 illegal firearms, arrest eight

Gov. Albert Bryan on Jan. 2, 2021, condemned celebratory gunfire in a statement issued after a Virgin Islands Police Department operation that authorities said resulted in the seizure of 17 illegal firearms and the arrest of eight suspects on weapons charges.

Bryan said firing bullets into the air during New Year’s Eve celebrations endangered residents, including people attending church and others taking part in holiday festivities.

The statement said the police action was part of Operation Eagle Eye. Bryan also credited Police Commissioner Trevor Velinor and officers involved in the operation.
