Mapp marks Philippine Independence Day and notes death of Filipino community leader

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp issued a statement on June 12, 2018, recognizing the Virgin Islands Filipino community on the 120th anniversary of the Philippine Declaration of Independence.

The statement said June 12 is commemorated each year as Philippine Independence Day. It said the Philippines achieved independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, and that June 12 became the country’s national day in 1962.

Mapp also recognized Manuel Cristobal Ramos, a founding member and honorary adviser of the Filipino-Virgin Islands Association of St. Thomas-St. John, who died on June 4, 2018.

According to the statement, Ramos served in several roles in the organization, including president. He also worked in the Department of Planning and Natural Resources’ Coastal Zone Management Division until his retirement in 2012.
