Bryan submitted bill to amend Virgin Islands human trafficking law

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. submitted legislation to the 35th Legislature on Aug. 18, 2023, to amend the Virgin Islands Uniform Prevention and Remedies for Human Trafficking Act.

According to Government House, the bill would amend Title 14, Chapter 3A of the Virgin Islands Code by adding a new Section 133a on mandatory reporting and amending Section 147 to authorize the attorney general, on behalf of a victim, to pursue a civil action for compensatory damages.

The measure also would appropriate $11 million from the sale of Little St. James to implement and maintain the purposes of the human trafficking law.

Government House said the proposed Section 133a identifies who would be required to report suspected human trafficking, defines failure to report, and sets out procedures for reporting suspected trafficking.
