Bryan proclaimed June 29 to July 2 as Virgin Islands Freedom Week
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a proclamation on June 30, 2020, declaring June 29 through July 2 as Virgin Islands Freedom Week and National Caribbean American Heritage Month.
The proclamation coincided with the week in which the U.S. Virgin Islands observed Emancipation Day and Independence Day.
Government House said the observance was intended for commemorations, recognitions and celebrations of people of Caribbean ancestry in the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean Americas and globally.
The proclamation also referenced Emancipation Day on July 3, which marks the 1848 emancipation of enslaved people in the former Danish West Indies.
