Bryan planned school visits as 2023-24 public school year was set to begin Aug. 7
Government House said on August 1, 2023, that the 2023-24 school year for the Virgin Islands public schools would begin on August 7.
Communications Director Richard Motta said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. would accompany Education Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington to several school campuses on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John on August 7 to welcome students, faculty and staff.
Motta also urged parents to complete school-related requirements before the start of classes, including collecting devices and making insurance and other required fee payments.
In the same briefing, Motta said Licensing and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Richard Evangelista was leaving that post to serve as the governor's chief legal counsel. Evangelista had served as DLCA commissioner since 2019.
Motta said DLCA Assistant Commissioner H. Natalie Hodge would serve as acting commissioner until Bryan announced a nominee to lead the agency.
Responding to questions from reporters, Motta said recent vandalism incidents at schools on St. Croix and St. Thomas would not prevent schools from opening on August 7. He also said Evangelista's departure would leave a vacancy on the Cannabis Advisory Board until the Senate confirmed either the acting commissioner or a nominee.
