The Virgin Islands Department of Labor said on Jan. 20, 2024, that the territory added 1,000 jobs, raising average employment to about 36,000 from 35,000 in 2022.
The department said the increase reflected a 2.86% growth rate in the job market and was concentrated mainly in private businesses, led by the hospitality sector.
The department also said the territory’s unemployment rate was 3.47% and that 41,493 people were actively engaged in the workforce.
Labor Commissioner Gary Molloy said in a statement that the job gains followed challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2017 storms.
