WAPA gas carrier left St. Thomas mooring for routine inspection on April 3, 2020

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on April 3, 2020, that the gas carrier Berge Summit would be off its mooring and out at sea for 24 to 48 hours while routine inspections were conducted on the vessel's single-point mooring.

The mooring is about 7.5 nautical miles southwest of St. Thomas. WAPA said the mooring undergoes periodic inspection and maintenance, and that the vessel's owner would use the time at sea to test the ship's systems.

WAPA said the green vessel stores about 1 million gallons of liquid propane, which is transported to its power plants by the smaller vessels Epic Caledonia and Epic Curacao. The authority said the vessels are leased by Vitol, which was under contract with WAPA to operate LPG terminals at the St. Thomas and St. Croix power plants and supply propane for electricity generation.

WAPA said the vessel's temporary departure and the mooring inspection would not affect propane supply or electrical generating operations.
