U.S. Virgin Islands eligible for $2.9 million in Justice Department COVID-19 funding
The Virgin Islands was eligible for $2,932,867 in immediate funding from the U.S. Department of Justice under the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding program, the Law Enforcement Planning Commission said on April 3, 2020.
The funding was intended to help first responders prevent, prepare for and respond to the coronavirus.
According to the announcement, allowable uses included overtime, equipment such as law-enforcement and medical protective gear, hiring, supplies including gloves, masks and sanitizer, training, and medical needs for inmates in the Bureau of Corrections.
The Law Enforcement Planning Commission, which serves as the territory’s administering agency for the funds, said it was working with the Department of Health, the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of Property and Procurement to expedite purchases of personal protective equipment and other supplies.
