Mapp urged residents to take precautions as Tropical Storm Beryl approached south of the Virgin Islands
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp urged U.S. Virgin Islands residents on July 7, 2018, to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds and possible flooding as Hurricane Beryl weakened to a tropical storm and was forecast to pass south of the territory.
Government House said Mapp met late on July 6 and early on July 7 with members of his emergency management team and Federal Emergency Management Agency officials before issuing the advisory.
As of 11:13 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time on July 7, the National Weather Service reported that Beryl had weakened to a tropical storm and was expected to continue moving west-northwest over the following several days. The weather service said marine and weather conditions were expected to deteriorate across local waters, particularly the Caribbean waters and the Mona Passage, late on July 8 into July 9, and advised mariners to monitor the system.
