Bryan signs law authorizing repayment of 2011 8% wage cuts to Virgin Islands government employees
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. signed legislation on August 16, 2021, authorizing repayment of wages withheld from Virgin Islands government employees under the 8% salary reduction imposed in 2011.
Government House said the administration planned to close out fiscal year 2021 at the end of September and then use about $45 million to $50 million to begin sending repayment checks by November to eligible employees.
The law restored the 8% reduction in salaries enacted under the Virgin Islands Economic Stability Act of 2011, Act No. 7621, during the administration of former Gov. John P. de Jongh.
Bryan signed the measure on St. Thomas with Senate President Donna Frett-Gregory and Senate Vice President Novelle Francis Jr. present.
