WAPA said St. Croix pressure-management project was expected to be completed by the end of February 2020

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on February 6, 2020, that the second phase of a water pressure management project on St. Croix was expected to be completed by the end of February.

WAPA said contractor GEC had two water-main tie-ins remaining, along with paving in trenched areas. The authority said the paving was being prepared for the week of February 17, 2020.

The project included installation of more than 7,500 feet of 24-inch water lines and four pressure-reducing stations. WAPA said the work was intended to reduce pressure in over-pressurized areas and increase pressure in other locations to provide a more consistent water supply.

The authority said the new lines replaced aged and corroded ductile iron pipes that had contributed to potable-water discoloration. WAPA said improved service was expected in Beeston Hill, Contentment, Golden Rock and Catherine’s Rest.

WAPA said the project had reached 90% completion in March 2019 but was delayed by operational and storage challenges in the water system. Work resumed in November 2019, according to the release.

The remaining tie-ins, along Contentment Road and near Breezez Bar & Restaurant, were to be scheduled on weekends to limit water-service interruptions to schools, government offices and nearby businesses.

WAPA said the second-phase contract totaled $3.2 million. Work on the project began in March 2017.
